The global esports market is projected to reach $5.7 billion by 2028, whilst the global audience is expected to hit almost 900 million in the next 5 years, and this course at L&C IoT’s academic partner Burnley College is your starting point for a career in it.

This Level 4 qualification gives you a solid foundation in the esports ecosystem, while developing the practical, technical and business skills you need to stand out in a competitive field. HNC esports: What Will I Learn?

Throughout the course, you’ll explore how the esports world operates – from the key players and platforms that drive the industry, to the business and media strategies behind top-tier success. You’ll study the esports ecosystem in depth, gaining insights into how tournaments are structured, how teams are managed and how the industry continues to evolve. You’ll build hands-on experience by planning and delivering your own esports events and learn how to stream and broadcast them using professional audio-visual tools.
 
Along the way, you’ll sharpen your understanding of in-game skills and tactics, explore how branding and sponsorships shape the sector and develop the creative and entrepreneurial mindset needed to launch new ventures. The course also includes a major project where you’ll put your learning into practice – designing, managing and executing a full esports initiative

HNC esports: How Will I Be Taught?

We use a mix of engaging lectures, practical lab sessions, project work and online learning. You’ll work on real scenarios, collaborate with peers and build your confidence through critiques, peer reviews and feedback from professionals.

You’ll also be assessed through a wide range of methods – from presentations and live demos to reports, reflections and creative media projects.

Where Will My esports Qualification take Me?

This course is designed to unlock multiple routes into the esports industry. Some students choose to build their own ventures straight after completing their HNC, while others progress into specialist roles within professional organisations. The course prepares you for careers in everything from event management, marketing, team ownership and esports analytics, to shoutcasting, content creation, journalism and social media management. It also opens the door to further study, with the opportunity to top up to a full BA degree in a related field.

Whatever direction you take, you’ll leave Burnley College with a deep understanding of how the industry works and the practical experience to hit the ground running.

What Equipment Will I Need?

You’ll need a personal headset, memory cards and a laptop or PC. A camera and editing software will be an advantage, but on campus, you’ll have access to industry-standard kit to bring your projects to life.

Entry Requirements

To apply, you’ll need 104 UCAS points – that’s equivalent to a DMM in BTEC or BCC at A Level. If you don’t have formal qualifications but can show relevant experience in esports or media, or a strong personal motivation to study at degree level, we’ll still welcome your application. All applications are subject to an interview before admission, we can get to know your goals and help you find the right path forward.
